Project for the Graphic Design course at the Panamericana School of Art and Design and one of my first digital paintings. The project was to create a cover for the Piauí Magazine with the theme “The Giant Awakened” (referring to popular demonstrations in Brazil). My idea was to reread and associate Tarsila do Amaral's painting, “Abaporu”, with the idea of Giant — since Abaporu was a symbol of the Anthropophagic Movement, which was very radical and wanted to “swallow” European culture and transform it into something Brazilian.
In my illustration I wanted to highlight this fact in another way: Abaporu representing the giant, Brazil, the people who want to change the country, or rather, representing modernization, the search for an end to corruption and the improvement of the country. I also added a joke: Abaporu grabbing and scaring politicians, who are desperate and afraid of this search for “change”. For the lettering colors I decided to use orange in the headline “The Giant Awakened” to draw attention to the illustration.
