It's not always easy to be creative. Many times our customers don't accept a change a little more drastic, for various reasons, which makes us uncertain about our work. The fear of the unexpected affects us and hinders the progress of our creative process.

Because we're designers, we tend to be more flexible about changes and recognize failure as a natural part of the creative process.

The need for change comes naturally to us.

It is totally normal to have clients that do not accept certain changes and this can hinder what could be a healthy business partnership, not to mention the tendency that generates anticipation and uncertainty regarding the direction of our work. We start to wonder if it's good, if it's appropriate, if it'll last, etc. We start to doubt our job. As designers, we need to have the ability and confidence to convince and show the client how good an idea is.

We need to overcome the fear of uncertainty to start the change safely.

To achieve this goal, we need to:

- familiarize the customer with our creation process. Explain project phases and references of what will be implemented;

- base our solutions on solid facts. Research the client's company, products, services... verify the company's difference from others in the market, etc.;

- familiarize us with the client's objectives: where he is and where he would like to be;

- be honest. Good communication with the client avoids misinterpretations, as misinterpretation generates terrible solutions;

- let the client participate in the creative process when appropriate - be fully open to the client's changes and ideas. They may suggest ideas that you may not have even thought of or considered. Adapting is a sign of true collaboration.

Instead of “forcing” a change, we need to show our clients that they can trust us because they are working with someone serious and professional, someone who respects the creation process as much as the solution itself. By being flexible and confident, we bring good results both for the client and for ourselves.

To achieve trust in what we do, we depend on being always up to date. To always be up to date, we need to make an effort, learn, relearn... trust is not something that can be achieved overnight. It depends on your technical training, the experience you acquire during the working years (including the time you set aside for personal projects — they are very important for development too!) and, even, of intuition. Yes, intuition. Intuition becomes second nature, it's essential. It's when you develop a single voice, a single means of communicating. It becomes your differential, instinct, and is very important when developing a project. Clients see this in their projects and it becomes one of the main reasons for hiring you.

In short: trust your work, even when everything doesn't seem to work. Always look for new solutions - don't give up! —, be open to changes, listen to your client's suggestions, and always trust your intuition. The experience you acquire in each project will guide you and show you ever better paths.
