Drawings of the Week

First off, Happy Mother's Day, everyone. I hope you are enjoying this special day with your mother <3:)

This week I decided to return to the Canson role since I hadn't drawn drawings on white paper in a while, hahaha. I still have some sheets here, I may do more next week as well. I doodled on the sketchbook too and finished the digital mermaid painting I made on Procreate, yay! I was very happy with the result and with the evolution I had over the years. If you compare it with my old digital paintings (between 2013-2015) you can see a lot of difference. It was worth taking time away from digital painting to train more traditional.

When you work well your underpinning in the drawing — light and shadow, anatomy, proportion, etc. — you notice a lot of improvements. It helps with everything, even when it comes to creating digital art as well. That's why it's important to practice... hahaha, I know, I hit that key a lot, but it's true.

Patience and practice are key.

Let's go!

I started the week with a bit of a crazy sketch, haha.
And of course, I decided to paint with my Polychromos pencils <3
For those who didn't get to see the time when I was drawing on white paper either (just check older posts, by the way), the only difference here from Kraft paper is that white is the paper itself, so you leave some parts of the paper unpainted to create the “effect” of light. That's why I like working with Kraft the most, to be honest. I love creating everything, including lighting, haha. Of course, you can also explore, on any of the papers, other colors to create light effects.
I even decided to create some effects using my gold pen, in addition to very simple features on the skin that symbolize this “connection” between the character and nature. In this case, it's a fairy.
Finished drawing.
I doodle without reference in the sketchbook. Made with white pastel pencils and graphite:)
And finally, the finished mermaid! I really liked having explored the Procreate tools a lot to create it. I wanted to give an effect to the scales to bring that “fantastic, mysterious” feeling to her. That surreal, shimmering glow. It was really fun to create the scales from a textured brush and use the smudge effect to blend it into the lines. Below, of course, is a time-lapse video of the complete painting.

I had some problems with the app, however, right after finishing the painting, because out of nowhere the app would close... I believe it was more because I'm using a first-generation iPad Air than a problem with the app itself.

As I said in previous post, the number of layers you have available to work with the art depends solely on the size and resolution you select at the beginning. I separated some layers for some elements of the painting to test some things (effects, brushes, etc.) and I believe that because of this the art became “heavy” for my old iPad, haha. As I was almost finished, I decided to merge some of the layers (I had a maximum of 4 available) and the problem seemed to have disappeared. I think that if the layers have a lot of elements, very heavy, the problem must occur on old iPads. Anyway, I'll continue exploring the app to see if I can solve this:)

Which, in fact, is normal to happen even in Photoshop. I have a great PC here that I use for work — design and illustration (16GB RAM, NVIDIA graphics card... in short, everything runs perfectly) — and I remember that when I was doing my art in Photoshop, as you go into detail and the file gets heavier, it tends to slow down the program, haha. Normal.

OBS: I added a new project with some of my pastel pencil and graphite art! If you want to check it out, just click hereto. Next week I will add a separate one for drawings in ink pens. In addition, I added more products to my stores in Colab55 and Society6. The mermaid should enter soon too, between today and tomorrow ;)

And that's it for today, guys. I hope you enjoyed today's post and, as always, there will be more next week!
